Beyond Marriage:  Configurations of Same-Sex Bonding in the Ancient Mediterranean

This book takes the discussion of the role of same-sex sexuality in ancient society beyond issues of marriage and legal constraints, into ideas about the role of same-sex bonding and pairing as they affect and are affected by Greek and Roman social institutions.  

Some issues dealt with by these papers are:  the level of legality same-sex weddings conferred (and did not confer); the Patroklos-Akhilleus bond as seen in respect of references to marriage by Briseis; the homosociality of the appeal of Ovid’s Fasti; and the long-term homosocial bonding of masters and disciples in early Christian desert communities.  

Many of the papers in this volume formed part of the Lambda Classical Association’s annual panel at the 2002 meeting of the American Philological Association and Archaeological Institute of America, which took place in Philadelphia, PA.
